When I first showed this poem to a literary-minded couple I have known for many years (one of them now deceased), they had very different reactions to the theme that may undergird the words.
For her, there was a sort of affirmation to the poem; the constant, ongoing renewal found everywhere in nature is an offset of human frailty, she might have said. For him, nature remained indifferent to suffering.
